SUSTAINABILITY

At Areca County Heritage Homestay, we believe in the harmonious coexistence of heritage and nature. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of our ancestral land, our commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in our way of life. We strive to create a haven where guests can experience the beauty of the natural world while knowing that their stay contributes positively to the local community.

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Our commitment to sustainability starts from the very buildings you stay in. We have embraced sustainable construction practices to ensure that our structures are both eco-friendly and culturally resonant.

Natural Building Materials: Our homestay structures are built using locally sourced and sustainable materials. Traditional architectural techniques are employed, ensuring that our buildings blend seamlessly with the natural landscape while promoting energy efficiency. We use materials such as natural laterite stone and wood, which not only reduce the environmental impact but also support local economies.

Energy-Efficient Design: Our buildings are designed to be energy-efficient, maximizing natural light and ventilation to reduce the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. Laterite stone walls, shaded verandas and strategically placed windows help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures naturally.

Earthen Roofs and Walls: All our cottages feature two layers of earthen clay tiles which help in regulating building temperatures and providing additional insulation. Walls are built using porous laterite stones, exposed directly on the exteriors without any cement plastering.

ECO FRIENDLY PRACTICES

Our homestay is designed with sustainability at its core. We employ a range of eco-friendly practices to minimise our environmental footprint:

Water Conservation: Water is a precious resource and we take measures to conserve it diligently. We have water-efficient taps, toilets, and showers to reduce water usage.

Energy Efficiency: We have implemented a comprehensive energy conservation program that includes heating and cooling systems are designed to consume less energy while maintaining optimal comfort. We use BLDC Fans and electric geysers that auto switch-off. We use LED lighting throughout our property to reduce energy consumption.

Safe Disposal: Electronics, batteries and lightbulbs are disposed of safely to avoid environmental contamination. Many times founders carry them while travelling to Bangalore as local options to disposal is limited.

Refillable Toiletry Containers: We have shower gel & shampoo dispensers attached to the bathroom wall, eliminating single-use plastics in guest rooms.

Refillable Water Bottles: We do not try to sell and make money of single use plastic water bottle. We provide in-house purified water in a refillable bottle or jug to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles.

Food Waste Reduction Programme: Excess food is either donated or taken away to their home by staff or composted to create nutrient-rich soil for our farms.

Digital Check-In: We are registered with Tourism Department of Karnataka Government and required to collect identity details of all the guests. By filling up the online check-in form, you can just walk-in to your cottage without having to wait for check-in formalities.

Digital Invoice: We provide digital invoice to save on paper and ink.

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING

Our sourcing practices reflect our commitment to environmental and social responsibility:

Responsible Purchasing Policy: We prioritise eco-friendly and ethically sourced products.

Locally Sourced Vegetables & Fruits: We support local farmers by sourcing our vegetables & fruits locally.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Areca County is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. We are dedicated to preserving this biodiversity through various conservation efforts:

Habitat Protection: We maintain large areas of our property as natural habitats for wildlife & birds. Indigenous plant species are cultivated to support local ecosystems, and invasive species are controlled to protect native flora and fauna.

Sustainable Tourism: We promote responsible tourism by educating our guests on the importance of conservation. Guided nature walks, bird watching, and educational tours are offered to raise awareness about the local environment and the importance of preserving it.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Sustainability is not just about environmental conservation; it also involves supporting and uplifting our local community. We are committed to:

Local Employment: We prioritise hiring local staff, providing them with fair wages and opportunities for skill development. This helps in sustaining the local economy and promoting community well-being.

Cultural Preservation: Areca County is rich in cultural heritage. We actively engage with local artisans and craftsmen, promoting their work and ensuring that traditional skills and knowledge are passed down to future generations.
